The contents of the box were listed as "cardboard."" src="http://www.greenpeace.org/raw/image_big_teaser/international/photosvideos/photos/whale-meat-exposed.jpg" width=180 align=left>
Greenpeace Japan whale campaign coordinator Junichi Sato, with the whale meat that was stolen from Japanese taxpayers, and which he provided as evidence to the government -- only to be arrested.
Tokyo, Japan — Japanese police have arrested two Greenpeace activists for exposing a whale meat scandal involving the government-sponsored whaling programme. The two activists, Junichi Sato, 31, and Toru Suzuki, 41, are being investigated for allegedly stealing a box of whale meat which they presented as evidence.
The box of the most expensive cuts of whale meat had been illicitly removed by crew of the Nisshin Maru, the whaling factory ship, following this year's Southern Ocean whale hunt. Its contents were marked "cardboard" and it was shipped to a private address. Tracked by our investigators, it was intercepted and turned over to the Public Prosecutor in Tokyo, as evidence of wide-scale corruption at the heart of the whaling operation in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
We requested an investigation into the scandal, and the Public Prosecutor agreed that there was sufficient evidence of wrongdoing. The investigation is currently underway, and has not yet reached any conclusions. In light of evidence that the operators of the whaling operation were aware of the scandal and did nothing, we asked that the investigation not focus on crew, but on the bureaucrats who run the whaling programme at public expense.
The Japanese whaling programme costs the Japanese taxpayer 500 million yen per year (around 4.7 million US dollars).
The only arrests thus far have been of the Greenpeace activists who presented the evidence.
UPDATE 21 June 2008 The Tokyo District Prosecutor Office has announced that it has been unable to find evidence of the embezzlement and that the investigation into crew and whaling officials has been dropped.
Clearly this has been a difficult investigation for the Prosecutor's Office when the level of corruption runs so deep in the whaling industry, an industry backed by powerful forces within the government. However, some questions remain unanswered:

If Kyodo Senpaku, the company that operates the whaling ships, was legally giving out whale meat to the crew then why did they change their story three times in almost as many days?

Why did the crew lie about the contents of the boxes containing the meat, claiming that they contained cardboard when in fact they were stuffed full of prime whale meat cuts worth tens of thousands of dollars?

And why, before the scandal was exposed, did an official of the Japanese Fisheries agency claim that whale meat was never given to crew?

Read the full dossier of evidence, and decide for yourself
UPDATE 22 June 2008 At a hearing this morning, the "Tokyo Two" have been ordered held another ten days without charge. We are appealing that decision tomorrow. In the meantime, our lawyer believes that the number of people who have written demanding their release -- nearly 50,000 at this writing -- could help their case considerably. Please, if you have not already, take action and encourage others to do so as well: http://www.greenpeace.org/tokyo-two
"This is the backlash," said Greenpeace Executive Director Jun Hoshikawa. "We've uncovered a scandal involving powerful forces in the Japanese government that benefit from whaling, and it's not surprising they are striking back. What is surprising is that these activists, who are innocent of any crime, would be arrested for returning whale meat that was stolen from Japanese taxpayers. In whose interest were these arrests made? Because it would appear to us that this is an intimidation tactic by the government agencies responsible for a scandal."
Intimidation tactics

Our first news that an arrest was imminent came from Japanese television stations. Someone leaked the information to ensure images of Greenpeace activists under arrest appeared on news reports in Japan.

More than 40 police officers raided our offices and the homes of the activists, and spent 10 hours seizing cell phones, documents, and computers, despite the fact that we had documented every step of how we obtained the whale meat, turned the full dossier over with the evidence, and made ourselves available to police to help with the investigation at any time. A simple phone call could have brought Junichi and Toru to the police station. Instead, the government made a public spectacle of shutting Greenpeace down.
The investigation

Our four-month undercover investigation revealed evidence of an embezzlement ring involving crew members on board the Nisshin Maru, who were openly taking the best cuts of whale meat during the so-called scientific hunt, smuggling it ashore disguised as personal luggage and then passing it to traders for illegal sales.
Working from information given by former and current Kyodo Senpaku employees, we documented the off-loading of smuggled whale meat into a special truck, in full view of Kyodo Senpaku officials and crew members when the Nisshin Maru docked on April 15th, this year.
The consignment was documented by our team once it left the ship and tracked to a depot in Tokyo. One of four boxes destined for the same private address was then intercepted in order to verify the contents and establish the fraud.
The consignment notes claimed the box contained "cardboard" but in reality it held 23.5kg of salted 'prime' whale meat, worth up to US$3,000. One informer told Greenpeace that dozens of crew take as many as 20 boxes each. One crewmember was overheard to claim he had built a house on the proceeds from his whale-meat sales over the years.
Official denials

On May 8th, before the scandal broke, Takahide Naruko, an official with the Japanese Fisheries Agency, was asked by investigators whether sailors "bring back some whale meat as private souvenirs," to which he replied "Of course not," explaining that the distribution of whale meat was only through official channels, at a price set by the Fisheries Agency to offset the costs of the publicly funded whaling programme.
Following the revelations, Kyodo Senpaku, the company that runs the whaling ship, also at first denied that any whale meat was being given away or sold outside official channels, then changed their story to claim that some "souvenirs" were given to crew members. Even so, these souvenirs were described to be a few kilos of frozen whale meat -- very different from 23.5 kilos of prime cuts uncovered by Greenpeace, which the crew salt-pickle in their cabins.
On May 28th, an editorial in Asahi Shinbum noted the contradiction between claims by the Institute for Cetacean Research that souvenirs were being handed out, and the claims by Kyodo Senpaku that they were not. The newspaper called the "contrived explanations" suspicious and asked for a full investigation.
"The whaling programme in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is funded by the Japanese taxpayers, including the Greenpeace activists who have been arrested, and they have a right to know who is profiting from their money," said Mister Hoshikawa.
"The Japanese whaling programme has been shamed internationally for its lack of scientific credibility, now it is being shamed at home as well for trying to hide the corruption, and now for taking revenge on those who have exposed it. The Greenpeace activists should be immediately released."

Release our activists

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-22T17:29:05Z</dcterms:modified>

FW: Greenpeace Valentine's Day

Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 14:52:52 -0600
From: staff@email.greenpeace.org
To: chanitacr
Subject: Valentine's Day

ACTIVISTS NEWSLETTER
February 2008

It's almost Valentine's Day! And yes - he's back! They're not in the clear yet, but this is great news.
Nukes: It's not often that a company's spokesperson says "Greenpeace pressure works", but that's basically what ING Bank's spokesperson said just the other day in their announcement not to finance a nuclear power station in Slovakia.

Go deeper into Greenpeace
Rex Weyler was the editor of Greenpeace's first newsletter way-way-back. Papua New Guinea's chief delegate put words to our message in a bottle, and shamed the US delegation into submission. Watch the video and read a Bali reportback blog from one of our climate campaigners who was there.

Holiday greetings from Mr. Splashy Pants
This year we made you a holiday greeting card featuring Mr. Splashy Pants, the coolest, most popular whale alive. Last month's name-a-whale competition became an internet sensation: 11,000 suggested names and over 150,000 people voting for their favourite whale name. In the end, though, the top name -- with a whopping 78 percent of the vote -- was Mr. Splashy Pants.

Humpback whales reprieved, but whaling ship plans loom
Japan has announced today that it will not be killing humpack whales this season! Well done to all of you who pressured your governments to call - Japan heard us, and humpbacks will no longer be part of the hunt thanks to the public outrage we helped generate, particularly the diplomatic pressure that resulted from the US and Australia. Even so, saving one species for one season is not enough! The future of whaling may well rest on whether the Japanese government succeeds in secret plans to build a new whaling ship.
By stopping this ship, we could stop all whaling in the Southern Ocean forever!

How many years does it take to ban an energy wasting lightbulb?
July 7, 2007 (7.7.07) will see millions of people gather for Al Gore's Live Earth climate change concerts all over the world. It could be the biggest international awareness-raising event ever. But you're getting this email today because you understand climate change already, and because we need your help!
Join our new 7 step campaign for the energy [r]evolution -- Greenpeace's response to the climate emergency.
<<< Click to sign up and join!
We're starting with the most outrageously wasteful of electrical household items: the incandescent light bulb. Consider this: A simple switch to energy saving bulbs in the European Union alone would save 20 million tonnes of CO2, equal to shutting down 25 medium-size dirty power plants; and this is before we consider the efficiency of other household products, or even cars!
Joining the campaign means you will get an email every week for seven weeks from us. Steps one, two and three are about changing your own lightbulbs and raising awareness about the campaign. Steps four, five and six are about demanding change from retailers, manufacturers and governments. Finally, step seven is a special surprise -- all we can say is "action!"
Are you still reading this? Please hurry, click here to sign up!
Whales safe for another year at International Whaling Commission

Thanks to the work and effort we've all done together, today we can say the whales won at the recent International Whaling Commission meeting!
One of the decisive points for this triumph was that, with your help, we had a majority of countries voting FOR whales and AGAINST whaling. The momentum of last year's one-vote victory for the whale-hunters was reversed.
This victory was thanks to the work of Greenpeace staff and volunteers around the world together with I-GO Campaigns and events that all of you created, like: the "Saint Valentine's at the Japanese Embassies" campaign, the "Ecuador say no to hunting" campaign and finally the "Big Blue March for whales," which began as one supporters' suggestion and became an event in 50 countries.
Thousands of people from around the world mobilized to defend whales. We've shown once again that together we can obtain real goals in our mission to defend the environment!

You are already part of this! But the more numerous we are, the more we can do.
That is why you should invite your friends, colleagues, and everyone you know to join Greenpeace's worldwide community of online activists NOW! Forward this email to your friends and ask them to join in. This year alone, we've stopped efforts to renew commercial whaling and we've convinced Apple to make their products greener with a phase out of dangerous chemicals: and these are but two of many, many victories we've all achieved together over the years.
Next year the IWC meeting will be in Santiago, Chile. There is much to do before then, and a ways to go to secure a long-term victory for the whales. We must continue strengthening our numbers. Please do what you can to help: the whales need you!
We want to know...
You can help us with your opinions: we've put together 15 questions to get a sense of what you, our active supporters, think about climate change and Greenpeace's role in fighting it. A few minutes of your time answering these 15 questions could help a lot!
----------------------------------
Whoops! We included a wonderful image of three sperm whales in our mailing of 15 May which we failed to credit to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Usa bombillas fluorescentes compactas (CFL).
Evita dejar enchufados cargadores y transformadores.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
Water

Fix any leaky faucets, toilets or water pipes. Even a small drip can add up to a lot of water over time.
Wash your car the natural way - wait until it rains.
Install water saving faucets.
Energy

Conserve fuel by turning down the heat at night and while you are away from your home — or install a programmable thermostat.
Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Insulate your home against heat loss and periodically check insulation.
Fix air leaks with weather stripping and caulking.
In the winter, change your furnace air filters once a month. The heater uses more energy when it is full of dust.
Insulate your electric hot water heater and pipes. Do not, however, insulate gas heaters and only start insulating gas heater pipes about six inches away from the heater.
Avoid using cars — walk, cycle or use public transportation whenever possible.
Avoid anything battery operated (or use rechargables or solar rechargables if batteries are unavoidable).
Buy locally — not only is it good for the local economy, it will save energy because products haven’t traveled across the globe to get to you.
Toxics

Use non-toxic cleaning alternatives in your home, such as the ones listed in the booklet.
Furnish your home with furniture made out of natural fibres, wood, metal and glass.
Avoid the use of polyvinyl chloride (also known as PVC or vinyl) in your home. The entire life cycle of products made from PVC pollutes the environment and your home. PVC items include shower curtains, flooring, even some children’s toys.
Avoid the use of aerosols.
Use castor or mineral oils to lubricate switches and hinges instead of lubricants containing solvents.
Choose water based latex paints over solvent based paints when painting your home. Never use lead based paints.
If you have a furnace, fireplace or gas heater, have them serviced regularly to prevent deadly fumes and install a carbon monoxide detector.
Ensure you have good ventilation and balanced humidity in your home to prevent the growth of mould and mildew, which can be harmful to your health.
Waste

Do not throw out your toxic household wastes, such as paint, paint thinner, and car fluids, in the garbage or down the drain. Check with your local facilities for proper disposal and avoid these products in the future.
Take your own bags to the grocery store. If you take plastic bags, use them until they are worn out.
Compost your food waste and use as nutrient rich soil for your lawn.
Avoid excess packaging.
Always use reusables mugs, lunch containers, batteries, pens, razors, etc.
Replace paper products with reusable ones (use recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper when you do have to use paper).

HAGAMOS UN ESFUERZO!!!!!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-03-29T04:22:12Z</dcterms:modified>

Ask Denmark to SAVE whales

Dear friend,

In the next few months, Japanese whalers plan to kill 945 whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Greenpeace's ship, the Esperanza, is on its way to stop the killings.

Last year our activists managed to stop the whalers from killing 82 whales by putting themselves between the whales and the harpoons.

But what we do in the Southern Ocean will not be enough to save all the whales!

That's why the whales need YOU to campaign with us.

Please ask the Danish government not to attend the so-called "Normalization" meeting that Japan is holding next month in Tokyo. The Japanese government plans to use the meeting to create the illusion that most of the world wants to end the moratorium on commercial whaling - but this is clearly not the case! Denmark's presence at the meeting will be advertised to the media by their Japanese hosts as evidence of support for the Japanese position...which means more killing of whales!

Thousands of Greenpeace supporters around the world are contacting Danish embassies in dozens of countries - please join in! To get more involved in the campaign, visit our cool new I-GO site.

Remember 945 whales are waiting for your help.

Sincerely,

P.S. Join the Biggest Crew Ever! There are lots of things you can do to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Campaign with us!

P.P.S. You can save whales. Click here now to ask Denmark to Defend the Whales!
